SharePoint I Need To Web Part
The I Need To web part only ships with MOSS, this will not work on WSS only server.

Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS) & MOSS Demo site by Ian Morrish

When you create a MOSS site using the Collaboration Portal template, you get a "I Want To..." web part. This is wired up to the Site Directory by default.

For the demo web part to work, you should logon using the 'Welcome' link at the top of this page.
User Name: vs\demouser
Password: Templates

If you want to have a separate list to manage the I Want To menu then it must be a list that contains the following fields:

  • Title (single line of text)
  • URL (Hyperlink field, must be called URL, can't just rename an existing field to URL, all upper case)
  • Multi Choice field (can be given any name)

I have an example list created here http://www.wssdemo.com/lists/ineedto

Even if you only have one category of links, you must have the multi choice category field.

You can then set the properties of the I Need To web part.

If you want to place multiple copies of the web part on the same page, follow the instructions in this article http://blogs.officezealot.com/jrblog/archive/2007/10/08/i-need-to-web-part.aspx

If you try and use this web part in a normal Collaboration Team Site it won't work because the /_layouts/portal.js is not included by default. You can add this script in the Master Page or add it in a Content Editor web part placed on same page.
