Dynamic MindManager Map Generated from SharePoint List Data

Using the Data View web part and the concept of an XML Data Island, I was able to get the Mindjet HTML Viewer control to render data directly from a SharePoint list.

See the demo here http://www.wssdemo.com/Pages/MindManager2.aspx (this will download the active viewer automatically).

The tricky part was grouping the list data to create the sub-topics. The XML format is very order specific and not well documented. I only have the evaluation copy of MindManager which doesn't have all the features.

Hi Ian - as a regular MindManager-user and SharePoint Developer this viewer looks very interesting. However, the install option for the MindManager Viewer fails in Internet Explorer (7) because the publisher can't be verified. I can't see if this is a problem with MindJet's installer or it is the way you have deployed it - but the end result is that I get a message stating that the installation won't start. I've solved the issue by installing the plugin from MindJets own site - http://www.mindjet.com/resources/downloads/mm_viewer_plugin.aspx?install=viewer - where it works fine (and afterwards your viewer also works nicely). But perhaps you should update the installation guide or contact MindJet if the problem seems to be on their side. If you are willing to share how you made the integration with a SharePoint-list I'll be very happy. Regards Jens

It can be a bit tricky to get the activex control to install with Vista/UAC + IE 7/8 security. Go to this page http://www.mindjet.com/resources/downloads/mm_viewer_plugin.aspx and follow the instructions (on the page and in the IE yellow bar).

This is great! One of the things I've been meaning to get around to for...a couple of years now, honestly...is a tool that reads site collection permissions and displays them graphically in a MindMap. I've done this manually many times for clients to display their "as-is" permission model which always turns out looking pretty hideous and modeling out the "to-be" model for how they should manage permissions in a way that will maximize administrative efficiency and understandability. It's a very powerful tool to use in consulting engagements. I would love for someone to build such a tool!
