Connect.Collaborate.SharePoint

SharePoint and Collaboration, yes you can!

I don't know what your definition of collaboration is but I'm looking forward to some of the SharePoint Conference sessions that are being presented by customers.
(Seems to fly in the face of some analysts who say SharePoint can't do this ;-)

Ford: Roadmap and Business Models for Adopting SharePoint as Your Collaboration Tool

Presented By: Kevin Tracy; Christine Gelletly- Ford

This session outlines a successful roadmap and business model which companies can use to adopt SharePoint as their strategic collaboration tool. Working with Microsoft, Ford Motor Company deployed Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 to provide a common platform to consolidate multiple islands of collaboration tools. In 2007, Ford continued with the deployment of this platform by upgrading to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. The advanced features of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 accelerated adoption as SharePoint quickly became the shared workspace of choice at Ford Motor Company. As adoption increased, Ford Motor Company faced additional challenges by application teams wishing to customize the SharePoint platform. This session provides a high level overview of Ford Motor Company's collaboration strategy and how SharePoint fits into this strategy. A re-useable blueprint for bringing SharePoint into your organization, building a sustainable business model, and developing ways to drive adoption are covered. This session also addresses operations, managing customizations, and governance. The end result for Ford Motor Company was a shared workspace service offering that required very little investment. The savings from this service offering are being reinvested into Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 to further reduce the number of products that are deployed for collaboration at Ford Motor Company.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask my question, but the comment of "(Seems to fly in the face of some analysts who say SharePoint can't do this ;-)" caught my eye. I am a business analyst that used FrontPage to produce screen mockups to go along with UI specs. Our company just switched over to Office 07 and bye-bye went FrontPage and hello Sharepoint Designer. I have found it completely unusable. I can't even change label text or button text! Someone please help!!

Ian, thanks for sharing these. I would love to be there to listen and learn, particularly since I'm the analyst you are calling into question. Two points of feedback. Firstly, without an objective standard as to what "collaboration" is and means, then you are free to claim that SharePoint can indeed support "collaboration". It appears to me that you have just validated the entire reason for writing the 7 Pillars framework back in 2005 -- to give organizations an organizational-centric framework for evaluating different vendor products and determining where and how they worked or didn't in supporting team collaboration. Otherwise we have 1000 different vendors claiming to offer "collaboration" tools, but with very little insight as a result. Secondly, the three case studies that you have linked to appear to perfectly match the conclusion in my white paper ... http://co.michaelsampson.net/sp7p.html ... that SharePoint is suitable as a Pillar 1 product, that is for collaboration use cases where Shared Access to Team Data is required. I don't see these customers talking about the other Pillars where I argue from the facts about SharePoint in light of the 7 Pillars framework that SharePoint fails in 4 out of the 7 areas. Have a great time at the conference! M. Michael Sampson President The Michael Sampson Company Limited

Hi Courtney, FrontPage was split in to two products. SharePoint Designer is intended for SharePoint designers. Expression Web Designer is intended for traditional HTML designers.

Ian - I definitely agree with you. The presentations that are case studies of real world implementations have been eye-opening from the End User perspective. I especially liked Lori Garcia's demo of Chespeake Natural Gas, and then the Ford demo this morning.
